What is Acupuncture?

How does it work?

Our bodies are incredibly intelligent. More often than not, they already know how to heal—they just need the right environment to do it.

Acupuncture works by helping regulate your nervous system. We all know about the “fight or flight” response, right? That’s your Sympathetic Nervous System—the part of your body designed to protect you when there’s danger. It’s what increases your heart rate, tenses your muscles, and floods your body with stress hormones so you can react quickly.

Then there’s the Parasympathetic Nervous System, often called the “rest and digest” state. This is where healing happens. Your heart rate slows, your digestion improves, inflammation can decrease, your immune system functions more efficiently, and your body has the opportunity to repair itself.

Long before work deadlines, packed calendars, social media, and overflowing to-do lists, switching between these two systems was actually pretty simple. Imagine you’re being chased by a lion. Your body instantly kicks into fight or flight to help you survive. Then, after you outrun the lion (because you’re obviously faster than the lion in this story!), your brain recognizes that you’re safe, your stress response turns off, and your body returns to a calm, balanced state.

The problem is that our modern-day “lion chases” don’t end so clearly.

Instead of a lion, it’s the never-ending emails, the financial stress, the sleepless nights with a new baby, caring for aging parents, rushing from one activity to the next, chronic pain, or simply trying to keep up with the demands of everyday life. Our brains often can’t tell the difference between a true emergency and the constant pressures of modern living, so we stay stuck with one foot on the gas pedal.

When your body spends too much time in that fight or flight state, it has a much harder time healing. Sleep suffers. Digestion slows down. Hormones become imbalanced. Muscles stay tight. Pain lingers. Anxiety increases. Eventually, your body starts waving little red flags that something needs attention.

That’s where acupuncture comes in.

By gently stimulating specific points on the body, acupuncture encourages your nervous system to shift out of survival mode and back into a state where healing is possible. Think of it as reminding your body how to do something it already knows how to do. It isn’t forcing your body to heal—it’s creating the conditions that allow your body to heal itself.

One of my favorite parts of treatment is watching someone walk in carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders and leave looking lighter, breathing deeper, and feeling like themselves again. Sometimes people notice changes immediately. Other times, the shifts are gradual. Either way, the goal is the same: helping your body find its way back to balance so you can feel your best—not just for a day, but for the long run.

What Can It Help?

At your first appointment we’re going to spend some quality time together where I get to learn all about who you are inside and out. In this thorough intake process we’ll go over every detail relating to what you need help with, along with your medical history, and every day symptoms from head to toe. Every detail is important so I can best treat the root of your issue and tailor each treatment specifically to your mind and body’s needs.

The treatment itself will then include the placement of needles and any additional modalities that can help enhance the process. This is where moxibustion, electrical stimulation, cupping, or trigger point releases can be used.

The most common question: Will it hurt? Most people report not feeling anything at all, but at most, the needles should feel like a little pinch. Once the needles are all placed it’s time to sink into blissful relaxation. Most people fall asleep and report that they just had the best 30 minutes of relaxation.

Afterwards, we’ll go over a treatment plan to set you up for the best chance of success to resolve your issue.

What to Expect During Your Appointment

“Tatiana is by far the BEST. My son hurt his back playing baseball. I called her on Saturday morning and she took him in for his first visit. She explained everything that was gonna happen during his treatment. On his 2nd visit she had something come up and instead of canceling his appointment. She called and moved him up to a earlier day so he could still get treated. She is someone who truly cares for her patience.”

“Acupuncture with Tatiana has been incredible. Her unique technique and approach has given me physical relief from pain that I have been struggling with for over a year.
Her space is calming and comfortable. I am so grateful for her time and attention.”

“I have loved working with Tatiana! She is exceptionally kind and has tailored my care to my needs. Easy to communicate with and very accommodating. Her space is also very warm and relaxing. I've tried 3 other acupuncturists in the area and On Point is the place to go.”
